![]() ![]() The pineapple comprises five botanical varieties, formerly regarded as separate species: ImageĪnanas comosus var. The pineapple carries out CAM photosynthesis, fixing carbon dioxide at night and storing it as the acid malate, then releasing it during the day aiding photosynthesis. The fruit of a pineapple is usually arranged in two interlocking helices, often with 8 in one direction and 13 in the other, each being a Fibonacci number. The ovaries develop into berries, which coalesce into a large, compact, multiple fruit. In Hawaii, where pineapples were cultivated and canned industrially throughout the 20th century, importation of hummingbirds was prohibited. Under cultivation, because seed development diminishes fruit quality, pollination is performed by hand, and seeds are retained only for breeding. ![]() Certain wild pineapples are foraged and pollinated at night by bats. In the wild, pineapples are pollinated primarily by hummingbirds. After 12 to 20 months, the stem grows into a spike-like inflorescence up to 15 cm (6 in) long with over 100 spirally arranged, trimerous flowers, each subtended by a bract. In the first year of growth, the axis lengthens and thickens, bearing numerous leaves in close spirals. It has 30 or more narrow, fleshy, trough-shaped leaves that are 30 to 100 cm (1 to 3 + 1⁄ 2 ft) long, surrounding a thick stem the leaves have sharp spines along the margins. Commercially, suckers that appear around the base are cultivated. These suckers may be removed for propagation, or left to produce additional fruits on the original plant. After the first fruit is produced, side shoots (called 'suckers' by commercial growers) are produced in the leaf axils of the main stem. Once it flowers, the individual fruits of the flowers join together to create a multiple fruit. When creating its fruit, it usually produces up to 200 flowers, although some large-fruited cultivars can exceed this. The plant has a short, stocky stem with tough, waxy leaves. The pineapple is a herbaceous perennial, which grows to 1.0 to 1.5 m (3 ft 3 in to 4 ft 11 in) tall on average, although sometimes it can be taller. Purchas, writing in English in 1613, referred to the fruit as Ananas, but the Oxford English Dictionary's first record of the word pineapple itself by an English writer is by Mandeville in 1714. This usage was adopted by many European languages and led to the plant's scientific binomial Ananas comosus, where comosus 'tufted', refers to the stem of the plant. ![]() Later in the same English translation, he describes the same fruit as a "Nana made in the manner of a Pine apple", where he used another Tupi word nanas, meaning 'excellent fruit'. The first reference in English to the pineapple fruit was the 1568 translation from the French of André Thevet's The New Found World, or Antarctike where he refers to a Hoyriri, a fruit cultivated and eaten by the Tupinambá people, living near modern Rio de Janeiro, and now believed to be a pineapple. The plant normally propagates from the offset produced at the top of the fruit or from a side shoot, and typically matures within a year. Pineapples grow as a small shrub the individual flowers of the unpollinated plant fuse to form a multiple fruit. Since the 1820s, pineapple has been commercially grown in greenhouses and many tropical plantations. The introduction of the pineapple to Europe in the 17th century made it a significant cultural icon of luxury. The pineapple is indigenous to South America, where it has been cultivated for many centuries. The pineapple ( Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant with an edible fruit it is the most economically significant plant in the family Bromeliaceae.

Today, we do not have knights with formidable weapons and chivalric tournaments, where they present their strength, skills, and courage. People’s self-interest and materialism eliminated the knightly code of honor and the spiritual capability of chivalry of old times has been replaced by conventional social etiquette, which includes the act of showing regard for others, good manners and politeness. The medieval tradition of chivalry did not survive because of the political situation in Europe following the Renaissance. Our modern notion of knights is very much based in the ideas of chivalry, and we have to blame medieval romantic literature for presenting knights as the chivalrous ideal. Unfortunately, the well-intended and beautiful "chivalric code", rarely affected most knights, who plundered, slaughtered, and looted often when given the chance. His full awareness, “‘…as king of the people I shall pursue this fight/ for the glory of winning, if the evil one will only/ abandon his earth-fort and face me in the open. However, unlike medieval knights, who usually acted on their own, the nobles had a tendency to form knightly orders and brotherhoods supported by the ruling government. Beowulf demonstrates Hygelac as a loyal lord, true to his people in return Beowulf brings himself forward as a tribute to fight the dragon.Īs Beowulf earns the chance to hold the throne as king later on in the poem, it is evident that the responsibilities he held were much to his advantage when the time of battle arose against the dragon. He then gains wisdom as he witnesses Hygelac’s form of generosity towards him and his people, “The treasures that Hygelac lavished on me…He gave me land/ and the security land brings, so he had no call/ to go looking for some lesser champion,” (2490-2494). These two titles have very distinct roles in Anglo-Saxon society.īeowulf, as a young warrior need not much to worry about status and having the knowledge that his people are safe and satisfied. Based on the duration of this poem, Beowulf is accustomed to the warrior duties and later on the lifestyle of a king. (2532-2535) He believes that terminating the dragon is the duty only he can accomplish as well as longing for a feeling of satisfaction as he seeks the glory of winning the battle and knowing he has demolished the risk of danger his people will have to face. Poets, minstrels, and troubadours wrote and sang about the knights’ acts of valor in great detail. Knights who fought in the Holy Land became the subject of courtly love ideals. I shall win the gold by my courage, or else mortal combat, doom of battle, will bear your lord away. The Code of Chivalry emerged in the Late Middle Ages, taking on a different conceptual dimension following the crusades. Demonstrating his courage, Beowulf states: This fight is not yours, nor is it up to any man except me to measure his strength against the monster or to prove his worth. As Beowulf prepares to fight the dragon, he easily allows the warriors to stand their place and not go any further. The word chivalry is often associated with knights. Essay on Chivalry in Battle of Agincourt. The world of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is governed by these well-defined codes of behavior. These principles, which included bravery, loyalty, and honor, were designed to help knights uphold the values of chivalry, a term that refers to the virtues and values that were associated with being a good and noble warrior. If it was not for Hygelac, Beowulf would not have survived such a long, prosperous life, mentoring Hygelac’s son and soon holding the throne himself. The Code of Chivalry was the honor code of the knight and was an important part of the society and lives of people who lived during the Medieval times. The chivalric code of honor is a set of principles that knights in medieval Europe were expected to follow. Beowulf acknowledges how privileged he is to have a life of luxury and obtain such wisdom inherited by Hygelac. A sorrowful mood is brought upon this specific text, as Beowulf reminisces on the death of Hygelac, “I marched ahead of him, always there/ at the front of the line and I shall fight like that/ for as long as I live…” (Beowulf 2497-2499). In one specific passage of this poem, Beowulf is portrayed as an ideal retainer by the loyalty, courage and fealty to the king he possesses.Īt the beginning of this passage, Beowulf reflects on King Hygelac and the many sacrifices and deeds he provided to Beowulf during his youth. In the passage from Beowulf, the poet’s interest in the duties of a loyal retainer and the duties of a great king are evident in the specific language he uses to describe Beowulf’s encounter with the dragon. The Importance of the Retainer and King in the Heroic Code Members of the Anglo-Saxon warrior society subscribed to an ethos that celebrated the heroic code. ![]() ![]() Seeds are very costly, be sure to not use a seed at the wrong time! Picking up Tatsu and giving her the skill with the scroll means all three have Recovery + Hunter + Holy Arrows, the only thing that makes Sand Sentinel better at that point in time is her % res which is much higher. The other big thing after "Recovery" is which/what skills do they come with, as some in game rarely if ever drop and can't be sold in store. You will notice with people (even Yomi) that don't have the trait/ability Recovery that they will drop in AP slowly down to nothing and then they will start to take massive hits, crits, lose armor rating and die (or you will just be sitting there clicking "guard" over and over again)- also, if Yomi dies it is an instant game over, something that frankly adds a whole new level of "risk" using her that takes her entirely out of play. This means that those that come with this ability/trait trump all those that do not. take no action)- this means that your people will be dealing more damage (high chance to crit, able to use skills, etc) while at the same time taking massively less damage (higher AP pool means less chance for enemy to hit, crit, ect). ![]() ![]() It's hard as a human being to even want to understand what drives someone (especially so young) to kill, and worse TORTURE another soul. I know we can examine their backgrounds (as is done in "Cruel Sacrafice" by Aphrodite Jones) but there are many people in the world, countless numbers of victims who do not turn to murdering. Send application materials to the subject line "Subshifts Fall 2022 App". Topological entropy was first defined along with its basic properties in AKM. After understanding these systems and their invariants abstractly, we will create code that explicitly computes invariants given the adjacency matrix of a subshift of finite type. The goal of project is the computation of invariants such as the entropy and dimension group of a subshift of finite type. Roughly speaking chaos is characterized by the property that "the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future." The study of subshifts of finite type involves combinatorics, graph theory, and linear algebra. We will study a class of dynamical systems called subshifts of finite type. In the example f(x)=x^2, if the initial value is 2, then after one unit of time, the value is f(2)=4, after two units of time, the value is f(f(2))=f(4)=16 and so on. Using this formulation, time is represented by iterating the function. For example, f(x)=x^2 defined on the set of real numbers. ![]() From a more mathematically precise perspective, one can consider a function mapping a space to itself. Informally, a dynamic system is any physical system that evolves with time (e.g., a pendulum, a planet orbiting the sun, the weather, etc).
